Key Principle
Chapters XIII through XIX trace the Machine's systematic dismantling of everything that once gave Western culture coherence. The assault proceeds across seven fronts: heroism and cultural memory are inverted rather than replaced (Chapter XIII); the left-capital convergence reveals that progressive politics and corporate capitalism "sail downstream in a superyacht together" (Chapter XIV); culture is exposed as a spiritual byproduct, meaning that once the spiritual core is knocked out "its fate is sealed" (Chapter XV); Psychological Man replaces embodied identity with inward self-creation, opening the transgender-to-transhuman pipeline (Chapter XVI); the home -- Latin focus, the hearth -- is enclosed by the same logic that enclosed the commons (Chapter XVII); the nation is hollowed into the Grid, a geometric landscape of "rectangular delivery hubs, asphalt roads, electric wires" that "doesn't care about anything" (Chapter XVIII); and environmentalism is co-opted through datafication, so that only numerically tractable crises count as real while "the things which cannot be measured happen to be the stuff of life" (Chapter XIX).
The hollowing is not seven separate crises but one process viewed from seven angles. Each chapter removes a load-bearing element -- shared heroes, shared reality, shared metaphysics, shared body, shared hearth, shared land, shared earth -- until the structure cannot stand. What remains is anticulture: not a culture of its own but the active negation of culture, a void into which the Machine's replacement catechism rushes.
Two structural mechanisms drive the process. First, the culture of inversion: Western elites, having lost faith in their inheritance, define themselves by systematic negation -- "We are the opposite of what we once were" (Chapter XIII). Robert Bly calls this self-colonisation: "America was 'the first culture in history that has colonised itself'" (Chapter XIII). The vertical structures (tradition, elder authority, religion) that could resist have been destroyed, producing Bly's "sibling society" -- perpetual adolescents who can deconstruct but not build. Second, the left-capital pincer: progressive leftism and corporate capitalism are "expressions of the same modern ideal: boundless self-creation in a post-natural world" (Chapter XIV). The left attacks norms; capital monetises the fragments. Neither requires conspiracy; both serve technique.
Beneath both mechanisms lies Kingsnorth's deepest claim: the crisis is not political but spiritual. Guenon's "progressive materialisation" (Chapter XV) confines humans within individuality; Baudrillard's hyperreality -- "information devoured content and then replaced it" (Chapter XV) -- is the cultural symptom of that metaphysical collapse. And Rieff's Psychological Man (Chapter XVI) is the human type the Machine produces: inwardly directed, treating all external reality as raw material for self-creation, making the transgender-to-transhuman pipeline not an aberration but "the logical culmination of the journey from Rousseau through the sixties toward post-biological humanity" (Chapter XVI).
Why This Matters
The hollowing is not cultural decline in the ordinary sense -- nostalgia for better days. It is ground-clearing. Each element destroyed corresponds to one of the Four Ps (Past, People, Place, Prayer) identified in Chapter XII. Kill the heroes and you sever the Past. Collapse reality into hyperreality and you dissolve Place into Screen. Abolish embodied man and woman and you replace Prayer with Self. Datafiy the land and you convert Place into Grid. The hollowing is what makes the Machine's replacement religion (Chapter XXI) possible: you cannot install new sacraments until the old altars are smashed.
Understanding the hollowing as systematic rather than accidental changes the nature of resistance. Fighting any single front -- the culture war, environmentalism, nationalism -- within the Machine's own terms guarantees absorption. Kingsnorth, via George Grant, Lasch, and Guenon, insists that the only ground from which to resist is pre-political and spiritual: "Where, then, to stand? Can there be a left without progress? Can there be a right without capitalism? Or is this all just noise?" (Chapter XIV). Guenon warned that "even those who most sincerely want to combat the modern spirit are almost all unwittingly affected by it" (Chapter XV) -- the trap of false traditionalism doing battle with equally false progress. The hollowing is complete when even resistance operates within the Machine's frame.

- The fireplace ban: Governments ban domestic wood-burning in the name of air quality, completing the enclosure of the home. "Strip the last remaining fires from the last remaining hearths, and you are one step closer to what is perhaps the ultimate ambition of the Machine: the abolition of home" (Chapter XVII). The hearth was the literal focus of domestic life; its removal makes the household dependent on the energy grid and replaces shared firelight with individual screens.
- The Grid replacing national identity: A Grid-nation "retains the name and flag of its predecessor but its population is from everywhere, its culture is corporate-global, and its ruling class would rather be somewhere else" (Chapter XVIII). The Machine is "birthing its own ethnicity" -- placeless, screen-enabled, speaking relentlessly of diversity while producing uniformity.
- Neo-greens embracing biotech: George Monbiot calls for ending most farming and replacing it with vat-grown bacterial "food," declaring that "One of the greatest threats to life on Earth is poetry" (Chapter XIX). The environmental movement, once rooted in love of particular places, has been captured by datafication: only carbon counts, and anyone advocating smallness or simplicity is labelled an "eco-fascist." Climate change dominates the green agenda not because it is the gravest ecological crisis but because it is the only one amenable to numerical questions and technocratic answers.
- The sibling society's demolition instinct: Bly's analysis (Chapter XIII) shows the levelling instinct -- once a necessary corrective wielded by the powerless -- captured by elites and turned into a demolition engine. Christopher Lasch provides the class dimension: twenty-first-century elites are "more connected to international metropolitan centres than to their own hinterlands" (Chapter XIII). The result is a culture that can tear down but cannot build, because there are no adults left to resist -- "Where repression was before, fantasy will now be" (Chapter XIII, citing Bly).
Counterpoints
- Is Kingsnorth romanticising the pre-modern home? He acknowledges that the old domestic order was often oppressive, particularly for women. The feminist movement's desire to escape unpaid drudgery was legitimate. But he insists the error was not in seeking equality but in "leaving no one to tend the centre" (Chapter XVII) -- accepting the Machine's terms rather than revaluing domestic skill. Home-making, he argues, "is not something to flee from in pursuit of freedom...It is a skill, or a whole set of them" (Chapter XVII).
- Is the nation worth defending? Kingsnorth concedes that "nations stripped of spiritual purpose are merely human collectives seeking glory or wealth" (Chapter XVIII). The nation-state is itself a Machine product -- "nodes in the Grid, economic units posing as cultural ones." He argues not for nationalism but for the recovery of what nations were for before the state captured them. Solzhenitsyn provides the positive case: "The disappearance of nations would have impoverished us no less than if all men had become alike, with one personality and one face" (Chapter XVIII).
- Does the left-capital thesis flatten real differences? Spengler's claim that "there is no proletarian, not even a Communist, movement that has not operated in the interest of money" (Chapter XIV) risks dismissing genuine movements for justice. Kingsnorth's reply is structural, not moral: whatever the intentions of individuals, the Machine absorbs all modern political programmes because all share its materialist metaphysics.

- The inversion test: When an institution celebrates the destruction of its own founding tradition, you are watching the hollowing in real time -- the culture of inversion (Chapter XIII) at work.
- Follow the convergence: When progressive activists and corporate capital want the same outcome, the Machine is advancing. The left-capital pincer (Chapter XIV) is the hollowing's delivery mechanism.
- Check what cannot be measured: If a policy debate excludes everything that resists quantification -- beauty, meaning, belonging, the sacred -- datafication (Chapter XIX) has already framed the question to guarantee a Machine answer.
- Ask who tends the centre: Any reform that removes people from the home without asking who will maintain the focus -- the hearth, the domestic culture, the intergenerational memory -- is completing the enclosure (Chapter XVII).
- Distinguish the nation from the state: Populist anger "grows in the gap between the nation and the state" (Chapter XVIII). When that gap is ignored, resistance is channelled into nationalism the Machine can co-opt or demonise.
