Problem This Solves
Traditional analysis treats Big Tech's infrastructure — servers, algorithms, platforms — as simply more capital goods, an upgraded version of factories and machines. This misses a qualitative rupture. Cloud capital is not merely more powerful capital; it possesses a "third nature" that no prior form of capital has exhibited. Understanding this third nature is essential to grasping why the system has changed, not just intensified.
Without this distinction, analysts default to familiar frameworks (monopoly, market failure, regulatory capture) that cannot explain why billions of people voluntarily perform unpaid labour to reproduce the very infrastructure that extracts value from them.
Key Principle
Cloud capital is "the agglomeration of networked machinery, software, AI-driven algorithms and communications' hardware criss-crossing the whole planet." Beyond capital's original two natures — as a produced means of commodity production (commodity capital) and as a social relation affording extractive power (power capital) — cloud capital possesses a third nature: it is a produced means of behavioural modification and individuated command.
This third nature operates through three strands:
- Commands consumers to reproduce cloud capital (turns them into cloud serfs)
- Commands waged labour to work harder (turns proletarians into cloud proles)
- Replaces markets with cloud fiefs
Good Examples
From Don Draper to Alexa — the infinite regress: TV advertising was one-way desire manufacture. Cloud capital creates a permanently active two-way feedback loop: "What begins with us training Alexa to do things on our behalf soon spins out of our control... Alexa trains us to train it better. The next step is spookier: having impressed us with its capacity to appeal to our tastes, it proceeds to curate them... it is training us to train it to train us to train it to train us... ad infinitum." This infinite regress is "the essence of algorithmic, cloud-based, command capital."
Cloud serfs — unpaid reproduction of capital: All of us who post on social media, upload videos, write reviews, and move through space with phones feeding Google Maps are cloud serfs. "The fact that we do so voluntarily, happily even, does not detract from the fact that we are unpaid manufacturers." Big Tech's paid workers collect less than 1% of revenues because most work is performed by billions for free. "For the first time in history, capital has been (re)produced by unwaged labourers."
The New Enclosures — privatisation of digital identity: The original internet was a capitalism-free commons built on open protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP). Cloud capital required a prior political act: denying individuals ownership of their digital identity, forcing reliance on private corporations. GPS was made available as a commons (political decision). Digital identity was not (also a political decision, aimed at boosting Big Tech). This parallels the original enclosures that denied workers access to common lands and drove them into factories.
Bad Examples
Treating cloud infrastructure as just "better machines": A server farm is not like a bigger factory. Traditional capital goods assist in producing other commodities. Cloud capital goes further — it modifies the behaviour of consumers, commands the pace of workers, and replaces the market mechanism itself. Collapsing cloud capital into "technology capital" loses the third nature entirely.
Confusing cloud proles with cloud serfs: Cloud proles are waged workers driven to physical limits by cloud-based algorithms (Amazon warehouse workers, Uber drivers). Their suffering "would be instantly recognised by whole generations of earlier proletarians." Cloud serfs are unwaged — all of us performing free labour online. The categories describe different relationships to cloud capital and must not be conflated.
Assuming the "singularity" is about machine consciousness: Varoufakis reframes singularity as "the moment something invented by 'us' becomes independent of and more powerful than us, subjecting us to its control." It requires not just technology but a prior social/political transformation — the plunder of a commons. First the enclosures, then steam engines. First the ransacking of the internet commons, then AI breakthroughs.

Rules of Thumb
- When analysing any digital platform, ask whether it merely assists production (traditional capital) or whether it modifies user behaviour, commands labour pace, and replaces market mechanisms (cloud capital with its third nature).
- The three technical leaps that gave algorithms agency: (1) machine learning (self-reprogramming), (2) neural networks (brain-imitating hardware), (3) reinforcement learning (self-evaluating and self-improving). All three are necessary for cloud capital's behavioural modification power.
- Every singularity follows the same pattern: first the plunder of a commons (enclosures, internet privatisation), then the technological breakthrough. Technology alone is never sufficient.
- Cloud capital automates what the technostructure did manually: the Labour Command Service Sector (Taylorism) and the Consumer Command Service Sector (advertising, desire manufacture).
- If you are using a platform for free, you are the cloud serf. Your activity is unwaged labour reproducing cloud capital.
